I. BASIC INFORMATION

I.i. What is WUDC?

The World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC), dubbed as the “Olympics of debating”, is an annual gathering of the world’s best debaters and public speakers. Over a span of one week, participants will endure grueling debate rounds, entertaining public speaking eliminations, and fantastic social events. The popularity of debating has grown dramatically over the last few years with the total number of institutions that have participated in WUDC reaching over 400 as of the 2010 Championship. The Debates will be contested in the British Parliamentary format with 9 elimination rounds that will determine the top 32 teams who will compete to the penultimate rounds which will eventually culminate to the Grand Finals. Separate categories for English as a Second Language, and English as a Foreign Language will also be held.

I.ii. When and where will the tournament be held?

The tournament will be held on December 27, 2011 – January 4, 2012 within the De La Salle University Campus along Taft Avenue, Manila. IV.iii. How’s the weather in Manila?

The Philippines is a tropical country. This means that it only has two seasons: rainy and sunny. While the rainy season has likely ended by November, December occasionally sees its fair share of rain so it may be best to bring an umbrella just in case. December is probably the best time to come to Manila since the temperature is much more pleasant. It will be around 29°C or 84°F during the day with the temperature dropping to as low as 22°C or 72°F at night.

IV.iv. Do I need to bring an adaptor for my electronics?

Manila has both 110v and 220v sockets. 220v sockets are more common though and will be the ones available at the hotel and on campus. The 2 parallel flat prong plug, also known as the American Type Plug, is generally used. It’s fairly easy to find adaptors in Manila in case you forget to bring one.

IV.v. Will the venues be air conditioned?

Most of the venues will be air conditioned. The convening room and all debate classrooms will be air conditioned. The dining area, however, will not be. It is advisable to bring a light jacket as the air conditioning system of the debate rooms is centralized and the rooms can sometimes get a little chilly.

IV.vi. Will there be Internet access?

There is wifi on most parts of campus but if you aren’t brining your laptop, we will have several computer labs available for participant’s use. The hotel will have internet connection in every room.

IV.vii. What is the best way to view the WUDC 2012 website?

The best browsers to view the WUDC 2012 website are Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. The website also uses Flash, thus, in order to maximize your use of the site, it is best to get or have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

IV.viii. What currency is used in the Philippines?
